Firemen To Host Wheelock Benefit

The Anita Firemen will host a fundraiser for the Art Wheelock family on Saturday, May 10 from 4-7 p.m. at the Anita Fire Station.

Art is being treated for heart problems with a newly developed heart pump and has to frequently travel to Minneapolis for observation. Art’s son, Troy, is stricken with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and is requiring increasing care and attention.

The event will feature food, musical entertainment and a silent auction. In addition to the Fire Department, the event is being sponsored by the St. Mary’s Catholic Women’s Organization, Anita school cooks, and the family and friends of Art and Troy Wheelock. Supplemental funds will be provided by Thrivent Insurance.

School Improvement Review

Do you want to see some results of what the Anita School District is doing in strides of teaching our youth? If you do, this is your opportunity.

The public is invited to attend a review of elementary and high school progress toward our school improvement goals at the CAM High School in Anita. If you have any new ideas for the district, you will be given the opportunity to offer them. Also, time will be allowed to gather information on new student learning opportunities in the future. In addition, there will be some student projects on display.

To meet requirements placed upon the school district, a group of community members have been invited to serve officially as the committee. The committee as required has a broad array of people. However, all community members, not just parents, of the Anita and C&M School Districts are strongly encouraged to attend from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 8.

This is a great opportunity to see your school and what it is doing, and with your help, too, what it can do, for the students of our districts. All interested people of the community can come and join in. Please mark your calendars and feel welcome to attend. The administration and students look forward to seeing you there to join in on the excitement of educating our children.

To conclude the evening, several prizes will be given.

KWMT Radio Coming To The Oak Tree Opry

Classic country music is rapidly becoming a rare and precious musical art form. Finding it on your local radio dial might be difficult, but not so in Fort Dodge, Iowa. By tuning into KWMT Radio AM-540, you’re sure to hear not only ‘classic’ country music, but Disc Jockey Hall of Famer and American Old Time Country Music Hall of Famer Dale Eichor.

Dale Eichor is also well known for taking the time and trouble to play local and regional country music recording artists, especially if they have recorded some good country music. Eichor is also a polished country music singer and musician himself and returns to his roots quite frequently, especially in concert settings. He teams up with another successful classic country music recording artist, Bobby Awe, also from Fort Dodge. Together, they bring to the stage some of the most likeable classic country music in the entire State of Iowa.

According to Sheila Everhart, who books some of the talent at the Oak Tree Opry in Anita, “We are definitely looking forward to having Dale and Bobby back at the Oak Tree Opry again. They will be doing their classic country show on Friday, May 16, starting at 7 p.m. These guys are so good, they fill the house, so we highly recommend if you are traveling any distance at all, you reserve your seats. Regular admission is $7 and reserved seats are $10. We really hate to tell someone who has driven a long ways that we are full, so reserved seats are highly recommended.”

Also on the program, Sheila is joined by her husband Bob Everhart, a successful recording artist with the Smithsonian-Folkways label. According to Bob, “If you ‘google’ Bob Everhart now on the Internet, you’ll find all the good, the bad and the ugly, but what really surprises me is the number of new fans and record buyers we are getting from the six projects we recorded for Smithsonian-Folkways record company. All of Sheila’s and my material has been re-released on CDs, but I noticed the other day you could get one of my original vinyl LP releases of ‘Time After Time’ for $69. Whatever the situation, Sheila and I will be on stage to do some of those songs and hopefully sell a few of our new CDs.”

Bob & Sheila will be joined on stage by Marge Lund, a local singer from Anita, who has her second CD project released. Called “Songs From My Heart,” it is an extremely pleasant release filled with great old-time gospel songs. “I just reviewed this CD for Tradition Magazine,” says Bob Everhart, “and found it to not only be a five-star production of great old-time country music done in a gospel style, but the talent and abilities of Marge Lund are very present in this delightful CD. Anyone who likes their music soft, well done, alluring and easy to listen to will love this release.”

Joining Bob & Sheila and Marge are regulars Francis Hahn, a retired CIA agent who specializes in country songwriting and Rick & Harriette Andersen, backing musicians for many of the guests who appear at the Oak Tree Opry. There’s an old time player piano at the Opry now, too, thanks to Gary Meschke of Coon Rapids.       More information or reserved seats can be obtained by calling 712-762-4363 or e-mailing bobeverhart@yahoo.com.
